The media in Sarawak has been urged to help promote the country’s tourism industry, especially with Visit Malaysia Year set for 2026. Any promotional efforts by the media are encouraged to focus on the unique cultural and natural attractions that Sarawak can offer, as stated by Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing. Tiong, who serves as the Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister, also emphasized the importance of factual and ethical reporting during his speech at the Sibu Journalists Association’s (SJA) 30th-anniversary celebration.

Tiong acknowledged the challenges faced by journalists in the current media landscape and called for them to uphold professional ethics, objectivity, and fairness. He stressed the need for providing the public with truthful and reliable information. While Tiong’s speech was delivered by his press secretary, Ross Sia, he still conveyed his hope that media professionals would prioritize fact-checking and quality rather than pursuing sensational scoops and clicks.

Tiong expressed concern over the rising prevalence of fake news and disinformation, emphasizing that such threats undermine the foundations of journalism. He acknowledged the impact of technology on news consumption and sharing but expressed confidence in the Sibu Journalists Association’s ability to adapt, innovate, and uphold high ethical standards. He praised SJA for its dedication to pursuing the truth and holding those in power accountable, acknowledging their role as a beacon of truth and a voice for the voiceless in the community.

During the anniversary celebration, a total of 31 journalists, each with a tenure of 10 to 38 years, were recognized and presented with a Long Service Medal. The event also included the honoring of winners of the SJA Press Award. Tiong’s press secretary, Ross Sia, announced an allocation of RM10,000 from Tiong to support SJA in organizing its activities, further demonstrating Tiong’s commitment to the association and its role in promoting ethical journalism.
