The Youth and Sports Ministry has provided assistance to Muhammad Aqil Naufal Zahiran, an amputee, in determining the appropriate prosthesis for him to participate in sports activities, according to Minister Hannah Yeoh. On Friday (Sept 1), Yeoh shared on Facebook that her ministry, in collaboration with the National Sports Institute (NSI), has arranged for the fitting of a hip disarticulation prosthesis for the 11-year-old, who recently sought medical advice from a sports medicine expert.
A video of Muhammad Aqil finishing a 100m race using a cane at a special education athletics championship went viral, bringing attention to his situation. He lost his left leg in 2015 due to a bacterial infection and is currently enrolled in the Fully Inclusive Education Programme at a primary school in Pahang. Yeoh expressed admiration for Muhammad Aqil’s determination to complete the race, rather than focusing on his speed.
Meanwhile, Dr Ahmad Munawwar Helmi, an NSI sports medicine expert, stated that additional check-ups would be conducted on Muhammad Aqil to ensure that there are no complications when he uses the prosthesis. The Malaysian Amputee Football Association (Mafa), an NGO leading the Project Tongkat initiative that supports amputees through sports, also participated in the meeting.
Individuals with lower limb disabilities who are interested in playing football can contact 011-36296375 or email [email protected], or reach out via social media platforms such as the Projek Tongkat Facebook page or projek_tongkat on Instagram. This information was provided by Bernama.
