PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) has announced its plans for several programmes in 2023, with a particular focus on education and higher learning, entrepreneurship, career development, and social wellbeing.

A one-off payment of RM2,000 will be provided to support 10,000 undergraduates in their educational pursuits. This subsidy scheme, which has received 5,000 applications so far, will be disbursed in phases starting from August, according to Mitra chairman Datuk Ramanan Ramakrishnan.

This subsidy programme is also open to students of private higher learning institutions on a first come first serve basis.

Mitra will also be providing subsidies totaling RM2.49 million to pre-school children. An agreement has already been signed with the first group of 42 kindergartens, benefiting 1,035 children.

Another group of 71 kindergartens, with 2,123 children, will receive a subsidy of RM5,095,200 after the agreement is signed on July 27.

A joint programme between Mitra and Weststar Aviation Services Sdn Bhd has been initiated to provide training in aircraft maintenance for 100 Indian youths. Applications for this programme will be open from July 26 to August 30.

Furthermore, Mitra will also be introducing the Drone Operations Technical Programme and the Data Services and Electrified Advancement Programme. Applications for these programmes will be open on July 26.

In August, Mitra will implement a refurbished personal computer programme for Tamil schools, targeting 527 schools.

Lastly, Mitra will be launching the dialysis aid subsidy programme, which aims to support 9,000 Indians who are chronic kidney disease patients. Each patient will receive RM9,600 in subsidies for up to a year. The subsidies will be paid directly to the dialysis centres starting in August.
