The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has apprehended four Indonesian men for stealing scrap metal from a tugboat in Tanjung Ayam, Kota Tinggi. According to Capt Simon Templer Lo Tusa, the Deputy Director of Johor MMEA operations, the suspects were apprehended after their boat was detected by the Malaysian Maritime Sea Surveillance System (SWASLA) radar. Tusa stated that the suspects, aged between 19 and 39, approached a tugboat at 10.20pm on Sunday. A patrol team was dispatched to the location and found the four men in the act of transferring the stolen scrap metal onto their boat. The arrest took place 2.5 nautical miles southwest of Tanjung Ayam. The suspects were taken into custody, and their boat was confiscated. They were later brought to the Pengerang Maritime Post for further legal proceedings, Tusa added. The case is currently being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which pertains to theft committed on a vessel, and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, which relates to entering and staying in the country without valid travel documents.
In an unrelated incident, Johor MMEA Tanjung Sedili Acting Director, Maritime Commander Mohd Najib Sam, reported the discovery of an unknown man’s body floating near Sedili Kechil. The body was found by local fishermen 23.4 nautical miles from Sedili Kechil at 1.08pm on Monday. Authorities are currently investigating the identity of the deceased. The body, clad in a black shirt with red stripes and black shorts, has been handed over to the police at the Tanjung Sedili Maritime Zone Jetty for further examination and action.
