According to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officer who was shot in an incident in Kunak waters has undergone successful surgery. The officer had surgery on his eye, where the bullet was removed. Fortunately, his eye was saved, despite initial concerns that it may need to be removed. The officer is now in stable condition, as confirmed by the IGP at the Police Training Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

The police investigation indicates that the suspects involved were likely carrying out robberies at sea, taking advantage of the increased boat traffic between Kunak and Semporna. During holidays, many boats travel between these two locations, creating opportunities for pirates to attack. The marine police and MMEA will intensify patrols in response to this incident. The armed group of pirates responsible for the shootout will be further investigated to determine the weaponry used.

On a Sunday, two MMEA officers were injured during a shootout in the waters off Kunak district. The injured officers were identified as Zainal Abad Komel, the chief of the Banggi 48 MMEA vessel, and crew member Prayrie De Cuella Jimin. They were part of a patrol team conducting Ops Khas Pagar Laut when the incident occurred around 8.40am. According to MMEA director for Lahad Datu, Maritime Commander Dr Suzanna Razali Chan, the officers were patrolling when they encountered a pump boat near Kampung Pangi, Kunak.

As they approached the boat, shots were fired at them, resulting in injuries to Zainal’s right eye and Prayrie’s hands while attempting to defend themselves. The other four members of the team escaped unharmed. The incident highlights the dangerous conditions maritime enforcement officers face while carrying out their duties at sea.

The swift response to the shootout by law enforcement agencies underscores the importance of maritime security in preventing criminal activities at sea. The cooperation between the marine police and MMEA in conducting patrols will help deter future incidents of piracy and ensure the safety of those traveling by boat between Kunak and Semporna. The investigation into the armed group responsible for the attack will shed light on their motives and the weapons they possess.

Despite the challenges and risks faced by MMEA officers in protecting Malaysia’s waters, their dedication to maintaining maritime security remains unwavering. The successful surgery and stable condition of the injured officer offer hope for his recovery and return to duty. The incident serves as a reminder of the threats posed by piracy in the region and the need for continued vigilance and enforcement efforts to safeguard the waters of Malaysia.
