The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has seized more than 3,000kg of endangered marine species after intercepting two fishing boats in the waters northwest of Mengayau. The operation took place on Wednesday (Sept 27).

Kudat MMEA maritime zone director, Maritime Commander Maurice Grenville Abeyeratne, stated that the KM Ikhlas vessel spotted the two boats and conducted operations at around 12.35pm based on prior intelligence.

During the inspection, the boats were found to be carrying puffer fish weighing 630kg, dried giant clams weighing 1,368kg, dried turtles weighing 865kg, seahorses weighing 6kg, shark fins, and frozen Napoleon fish.

The second boat was carrying dried pufferfish weighing 375kg and dried giant clams weighing 100kg.

The first boat was operated by two Filipinos and an Indonesian, aged between 37 and 52. The second boat was operated by two locals aged 50 and 57, as well as a 45-year-old Filipino.

All suspects, along with the boats and seized items, were taken to the jetty to be handed over to investigating officers from the Kudat Maritime Zone. The total estimated value of the seizure is RM1.5mil, according to a statement released on Friday (Sept 29).

Maurice mentioned that the case is being investigated under various acts and regulations such as the International Trade in Endangered Species Act 2008, the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997, the Fisheries Act 1985, the Customs Act 1967, and the Immigration Act 1959/1963. The suspects are also under investigation for having dubious identification documents under the Ports and Harbours Enactment 2002 and the Ports and Harbours Regulations 2006.
