Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has called for more non-bumiputra citizens to join the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), particularly the Army. He highlighted that despite efforts to encourage their participation, the number of non-bumiputra personnel in the ATM remains low, at around three per cent. Mohamad emphasized the importance of support and encouragement from parents and non-governmental organizations in attracting non-bumiputra individuals to pursue military careers. He expressed disappointment that despite various initiatives, such as roadshows and promotions, the desired level of non-bumiputra participation has not been achieved. He urged more non-bumiputra youths to consider joining the armed forces, citing improvements in remuneration and military service benefits. The goal is to achieve more than 10 per cent participation from non-bumiputras.
Mohamad made these remarks during a press conference following the passing-out parade of young male and female soldiers. The parade, which involved 1,013 recruits, marked the graduation of series 197/23 and series 48/23 at the Army Basic Training Centre (Pusasda) in Port Dickson on September 23. Army Chief General Datuk Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan also attended the event.
Mohamad also mentioned that although the minimum qualification requirement for this intake is the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), the response from Diploma holders has been encouraging. He stated that many individuals view the military as a promising career that provides opportunities for further education and a better future.
Furthermore, Mohamad disclosed that the Ministry of Defence is still studying the possibility of continuing the Pemberian Khas Kepada Pesara (PKKP) special aid to military veterans. He added that the matter will be discussed in the Cabinet. It was previously reported by the media that the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM) has requested the government to consider extending the special aid in the upcoming 2024 Budget, which will be presented in Parliament on October 13. – Bernama
