More than 13,000 volunteers are expected to participate in this year’s national World Clean-up Day (WDC) celebration, according to Cairul Hisham Jalaluddin, the director of Johor Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp).
In Johor alone, 1,451 volunteers have registered and will be joining clean-up programs at 58 hotspots throughout the state.
Last year, over 10,000 volunteers participated nationwide, and the aim is to attract even more people to join the environmental program this year.
The clean-up programs will be conducted in coastal areas, river banks, and public gathering areas, with a total of 58 hotspots identified.
The WDC was first organized in 2020 in Kampung Pendas Laut, Gelang Patah, and this year, Kampung Pasir Gudang Baru was chosen as the venue due to its agro-tourism activities.
The majority of the villagers in Kampung Pasir Gudang Baru work at a nearby mussel farm, which is the largest producer of mussels in the country.
The purpose of choosing this location is to raise awareness among volunteers about how a clean environment can benefit and provide income to the local community.
The WDC will take place from September 16 to September 24.
The program is aligned with the International Coastal Clean-up celebration and the Johor Bersih initiative organized by the Johor State Government.
