A fire at the Merlimau Valley Oil Palm Plantation in Jasin, Malaysia has destroyed 5.26 hectares of the plantation out of the total 10.23 hectares since Sunday, Oct 22. As of 10.30am, 90% of the affected area has been extinguished, amounting to 4.86 hectares, according to the Melaka Fire and Rescue Department.
Upon receiving a call at 4.03pm on Sunday, two fire engines and a four-wheel drive vehicle from the Merlimau and Jasin stations were deployed to the location. Within nine minutes, a team of 12 firefighters arrived to tackle the fire that had engulfed the oil palm plantation.
Continuing this morning, firefighting operations are still ongoing, with 90% of the burned areas successfully extinguished, the department stated in a statement on Monday, Oct 23.
The cause of the fire and the amount of loss are currently under investigation, according to Bernama.
