KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat has rejected a motion filed by Arau MP Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim to debate the increasing price of imported rice and goods. Deputy Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor read a letter from Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, stating that the motion was not listed under the proceedings of the current six-day special sitting. Ramli stated that he would not allow the motion to be brought up and rejected it, citing the House’s standing orders. He mentioned that the responsible ministries have already received 55 queries from MPs on this matter, and MPs can raise further questions to the respective ministers during the winding up session.
Shahidan expressed his concern over the delay in response regarding his motion on the rising price of rice and goods. He emphasized the importance of discussing such an issue. He pointed out that notices he previously sent would typically receive an acknowledgment of acceptance. Shahidan further argued that the price of goods is consistently increasing and urged for reallocation of funds for development to alleviate the price of rice and goods.
Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan interjected during the discussion, and Deputy Speaker Ramli issued a first warning to Mohd Sany for speaking in the hall without standing. Ramli reminded him to abide by the House’s rules.
Deputy Speaker Ramli also issued a warning to Shahidan. He clarified that he has two more warnings left before considering further action according to the Standing Orders. He emphasized that warnings given to MPs will carry over into subsequent sittings.
The current six-day special sitting of Parliament, which began on September 11 and will end on September 19, is focused on discussing the mid-term review of the 12th Malaysia Plan.
