Traders and commercial entities using Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) leach bins are largely responsible for the rubbish problem in Dusun Tua, Hulu Langat, according to village heads. In response to a StarMetro report on August 22nd, in which MPKj suggested that Dusun Tua residents find better locations for the bins, villagers are calling on the council to closely monitor waste disposal habits of food traders, fruit sellers, homestays, campsites, and resorts.
Regarding the suggestion to move the bins away from the main road and into kampung areas, the village heads argue that placing an open rubbish bin in a kampung would only attract fly tippers. They believe it should not be the responsibility of village management committees to deal with such unsavory characters. Former Kampung Jawa head, Ramly Yunan, has urged MPKj to focus on ensuring that commercial businesses from the ninth to 18th mile Jalan Hulu Langat make arrangements for waste collection. He also suggests checking roadside traders to ensure they dispose of their waste properly, as many fruit sellers throw fruit skins where they operate from.
Ramly emphasizes that the communal rubbish bins provided by MPKj 10 years ago were intended for residents, not commercial entities. However, in the past two years, the number of commercial entities has increased, leading to overflowing bins. Nor Akmal Nordin, mukim Cheras penghulu, highlights another challenge in locating bins within a kampung area, as much of the land is privately owned and landowners may not agree to have a rubbish site on their property.
Kampung Batu 16 head, Md Gadapi Ahmad Harmain, adds that village heads must also consider residents’ sensitivities when deciding bin locations. He points out that no one wants a rubbish bin in front of their house, and due to the lack of gazetted space in the villages, finding suitable locations can be difficult. As a result, the bins end up being placed by the side of the main road.
