Malaysia has expressed its interest in purchasing military equipment from Turkiye, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He mentioned that some of Malaysia’s military equipment had been previously bought from South Korea, and the decision for potential purchases from Turkiye will be made by the Malaysian Armed Forces Council.
“We could be looking at drones and helicopters, according to Turkiye’s area of expertise. However, I will defer to the Armed Forces on what would be most suitable,” the Prime Minister stated after a bilateral meeting with Turkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Turkish House in New York on Thursday (Sept 21).
Anwar is currently attending the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
He added that it is now the responsibility of the Defence Ministry to initiate negotiations with the Finance Ministry and the Turkish government regarding the purchase of military equipment.
“As I have communicated to the joint chief of staff, our policy is that we do not want any interference in the procurement process or in determining what to acquire,” he affirmed.
Furthermore, Anwar mentioned that Erdogan has agreed to visit Malaysia in December. – Bernama
