The secretary-general of Muda, Amir Hadi, has stated that the option to join Perikatan Nasional was never discussed. This statement was made in response to Gerakan chief Datuk Dominic Lau’s desire to propose Muda’s participation in the coalition during the upcoming Perikatan leadership meeting. Amir clarified that Muda has never formally or informally submitted any applications to join Perikatan. He emphasized that any linkage between Muda and Perikatan does not represent the stance of Muda, as confirmed in a statement made on September 16.
Muda remains committed to establishing itself as the third force in Malaysian politics, aiming to provide checks and balances to the government and criticizing politicians who exploit extreme race and religious sentiments for personal gain. Addressing Lau’s comments, he claimed that Muda’s agenda and aspirations align with Perikatan’s anti-corruption stance. Lau believes that the two Muda elected representatives should maintain their parliamentary and state seats and sees potential for Muda to become a component party or ally in the Friends of Perikatan, given their shared anti-corruption stance.
While Gerakan welcomes Muda’s potential participation in Perikatan, Lau acknowledged that there are specific procedures that need to be followed in order to admit Muda to the coalition. Last week, Muda made an announcement of their withdrawal from the unity pact, and Syed Saddiq, the party’s chief and sole MP, moved his seat to the Opposition bloc in the Dewan Rakyat as a form of protest against the discharge not amounting to an acquittal granted to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in the Yayasan Akalbudi case.
