In spite of leaving the unity government, Muda will continue to offer support in areas including institutional reforms, which necessitate a two-thirds majority vote in the Dewan Rakyat.
Muda justified its decision to withdraw from the unity government and become a “third force” due to the discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) granted to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on graft charges.
“The Attorney General’s decision to release Ahmad Zahid of 47 charges without an adequate explanation has raised concerns among the public.
“This contradicts the principles of the Madani government in combatting corruption,” stated Muda in a Sunday (Sept 10) press release.
The party informed Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul of its decision in an official letter from Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
Following the ruling on Ahmad Zahid’s case, Muda believes that the country’s legal institutions have been compromised and the unity government appears to be normalizing the culture of corruption.
Muda additionally criticized the unity government for failing to deliver on promised reforms prior to the 15th General Election.
“Numerous reform commitments made before the election have been disregarded, using the excuse that this is a new government.
“Nevertheless, Muda remains committed to supporting the government’s efforts in advancing the national development agenda, such as institutional reforms that require a two-thirds vote in the Dewan Rakyat, even though Muda is part of the Opposition bloc as the third force,” said the party.
