According to Fahmi Fadzil, the statement made by Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin regarding the ruling of the Federal Court to nullify 16 provisions for offences under the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code (1) Enactment 2019, is not true. Muhyiddin had claimed that with this decision, certain actions that go against Islamic law would no longer be considered offences in the state.
Fahmi, who is the Communications Minister and spokesperson of the Unity Government, contested Muhyiddin’s assertions, accusing him of spreading false information. Fahmi expressed these views on his X (formerly known as Twitter) account on Saturday (Feb 10).
The ruling to nullify 16 provisions for offences under the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code Enactment (1) 2019, was delivered on Friday (Feb 9) by the Federal Court. The decision, made in an 8-1 majority ruling, was led by Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat. The panel of nine judges allowed Kelantan resident Nik Elin Zurina Nik Abdul Rashid, and her daughter, Tengku Yasmin Nastasha Abdul Rahman, to challenge the constitutionality and legality of 18 provisions for offences under the enactment. – Bernama
