KOTA KINABALU: Dozens of cars were either destroyed or substantially damaged in a fire at a workshop in Putatan near here on Saturday (Aug 5).
Besides the cars, a workers’ quarters and a swiftlet nest house were also razed in the 9.20am incident at the workshop located near a furniture shop at Jalan Ramayah.
A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said that no one was reported to be hurt.
He said a team from the Penampang fire station was rushed to the area after a distress call was made at 9.29am.
Due to the extent of the fire, he said, the team was assisted by firefighters from the Kota Kinabalu as well as Lintas stations here.
“Firefighters used water from the department’s water tanker to put out the fire,” he said, when contacted.
Also at the scene were personnel from the police and Civil Defence Force as well as Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB).
The spokesman said the team managed to control the flames at 10.26am, adding that the operation ended at 2.43pm.
“After putting out the fire, we established that the workshop, workers’ quarters and swiftlet nest house were completely destroyed.
“The cause of the fire as well as losses are still being assessed,” he added.
The workshop also housed old vehicles that have been left idle besides cars that were recently sent by their owners for repairs.
