PETALING JAYA: Popular content creator Khairul Amin Kamarulzaman, better known as Khairulaming, has urged social media users to be cautious of an AI-generated deepfake video mimicking his voice and likeness to trick users into making a purchase.
“The voice that you hear in the video – that is not my voice. That is an AI-generated video that a scammer has used to sell products,” he said in a video posted on his social media platforms.
In the almost one-minute video, Khairulaming’s voice and likeness were used to appeal to fans, urging them to purchase a wok from him to help fund repairs for his warehouse.
“I just want to remind you guys to be careful, as slanderous content has now become widespread and AI tools have been misused in so many ways.
“You may see postings featuring someone’s likeness, but it’s not really them. So please be aware,” he said, adding that in the past, scammers have also used his likeness in edited photos to sell items like wearables and other kitchen items.
Khairulaming reminded fans that he only sells two products – Sambal Nyet and Dendeng Nyet (dried beef) – on official ecommerce platforms.
“This thing has spread widely on Facebook. Think, investigate and be more diligent before purchasing anything online,” he concluded.
Khairulaming’s warning about the AI deepfake scam featuring his likeness has received over one million views, with some users claiming that their parents have been fooled into purchasing the product featured in the deepfake video.
Another user also said that she almost submitted an order for the product featured in the deepfake, while other users also expressed fear over the misuse of AI to generate fake content on social media.
In response to this incident, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said in a Bernama report that all social media platforms should include the label “AI-generated content” to prevent unwanted incidents.
Last month, popular singer Datuk Siti Nurhaliza warned users to be vigilant as scammers are using AI-generated deepfakes of her voice and likeness to lure them into a fake contest promising a cash prize.
The Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) has urged victims of deepfakes to come forward and report incidents.
The police stressed that only the individuals themselves can verify if their likeness, such as their face and voice, has been used without their knowledge, especially when the video is intended for fraudulent activities.
