Local hypermarket chain Mydin Mohamed Holdings is planning to install solar panels at 15 of its outlets nationwide, as part of the government’s efforts to promote a green sustainable future.
The installation of the panels is part of Mydin’s new Mydin Prihatin #forfuture programme, which aims to encourage the adoption of environmentally conscious, socially responsible, and well-governed (ESG) practices among its workforce, customers, and the industry as a whole.
Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, praised the company’s commitment and described it as an important step towards achieving a sustainable future for the country.
“Mydin’s environmental protection efforts serve as a crucial catalyst for expanding their business and creating new value while combating climate change,” he said.
“ESG practices have become one of the key factors that global investors consider when exploring potential investments.
“I hope Mydin’s commitment will serve as an example for other organizations to adopt more ESG practices, remain relevant and competitive, and ensure a better future for future generations,” he added.
The collaboration between Mydin and GSPARX Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Berhad, will result in the full installation of the solar panels by 2025.
The solar panels are expected to reduce carbon emissions from the 15 Mydin outlets by 20,643 metric tonnes per year, which is equivalent to planting 639,918 trees annually, according to Mydin’s managing director, Datuk Wira Ameer Ali Mydin.
In his speech at the event, he emphasized the company’s goal of achieving a 15% reduction in energy consumption and carbon emissions by 2030.
“We are also aiming to reduce excessive waste in our operations by 50% and exploring actions and measures to further reduce plastic usage by 2030,” he added.
