The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) is considering offering a special fee to TikTok Shop merchants for the registration of copyright and trademark for their online businesses. The pricing for this special fee will be finalized by the beginning of next year, after discussions with TikTok’s management. According to MyIPO chairman, Dr. Mohd Zuhan Mohd Zain, the regular registration price is RM950 for trademark and RM200 for copyright. However, merchants can check the registration beforehand for RM200 to ensure there are no overlaps with other parties. The registration can be used on platforms other than TikTok and is valid for 10 years for trademarks and 50 years for copyright.
Dr. Mohd Zuhan also emphasized the importance of immediate registration to avoid intellectual property infringement and encouraged all merchants to take the necessary steps. Additionally, he mentioned that less able merchants can register their businesses for free with the Intellectual Property Filing Fund 2.0 (IP 2.0), which has been allocated RM4 million for four years starting from 2022.
The signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between MyIPO and TikTok took place, with MyIPO being represented by its director-general Kamal Kormin and TikTok being represented by its Intellectual Property Rights Southeast Asia head, Simon Zhou. This collaboration marks the first between MyIPO and a social media platform.
During the MOU signing ceremony, MyIPO also launched the Palestinian Humanitarian Fund, which will run for two weeks to provide assistance to the people of Palestine.
