PETALING JAYA: The MyJPJ mobile application, which has been implemented for seven months, is proving to be a popular choice among users for its convenience in dealing with driving licence and motor vehicle licence renewals. Users, however, suggest that there is room for improvement.

One user, Muhammad Farhan Baharom, a 20-year-old student, finds the app beneficial as it allows digital copies of driving licence and road tax to be stored on smartphones. He appreciates not having to worry about leaving his licence at home or sticking a flimsy road tax sticker on the windscreen any longer.

However, Muhammad Farhan believes that some groups, particularly senior citizens, may find it challenging to adapt to the app. He suggests that both physical and digital copies of licences should be allowed for their convenience.

Another user, Salma, age 43, has been using the app since its launch in February and finds it more convenient than physical copies of licences and road tax. However, she encountered a slight inconvenience while renewing her licence, as she was redirected to another website. She suggests streamlining the process to eliminate the need for multiple platforms.

Salma’s husband, Joe, age 45, believes the app should make it easier for individuals to renew expired driving licences. He shares his experience of physically going to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) after his licence had lapsed one year ago. Joe thinks it would be preferable to have the option to renew licences through the app, as he had to resort to using a third-party service provider to assist him.

A self-employed individual named Gayathri, age 32, hopes the Transport Ministry will enable digital renewals for commercial vehicle permits. This would save time and money for small-business operators, as they currently need to travel to the JPJ office for these renewals.

Muzaini Shariff, a sales executive, also supports the idea of renewing commercial vehicle licences through an app. He notes the time-consuming nature of the current process, citing his own experience of waiting over an hour at the JPJ office. Online renewal would allow his company to handle it remotely with ease.

An insurance agent, Liew, expresses appreciation for the digitalisation efforts of the department. However, she emphasizes the need for improvement in counter services, citing her three-hour wait for a commercial vehicle’s road tax. Liew suggests enhancing the efficiency of these services and addressing any issues with self-service kiosks.

The JPJeQ mobile app, which provides users with a queue number and anticipated waiting time at JPJ branches, has helped alleviate some waiting time concerns. Launched earlier this year, the MyJPJ app offers various JPJ-related services, including driving licence information and vehicle insurance and road tax information.
