Seeking forgiveness or forgiving others is a powerful act that can heal relationships and even save nations, according to Projek Sama member Thomas Fann. Projek Sama is participating in the #MZB365 campaign aimed at combating hatred with grace.

In a blog post, Fann discussed Rwanda’s recent observance of the 30th anniversary of the genocide of the minority Tutsi by the Hutu in 1994. He highlighted the colonial legacy and political divisions that led to the massacre.

He mentioned how the genocide ended when the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) rebel group, led by the Tutsi, took control and emphasized unity, forgiveness, and healing in the reconciliation process.

Fann emphasized that forgiveness is crucial in diverse communities with strong religious identities to counter inevitable conflicts. Malaysian media and civil society organizations have launched the #MZB365 campaign to promote seeking and giving forgiveness beyond just the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festival.

He warned against the dangers of hate and anger escalating into genocides, wars, and civil conflicts, urging authorities and politicians to address these issues promptly. He drew parallels between Rwanda’s history and current tensions in Malaysia.

Fann stressed the importance of cultivating a culture of graciousness and forgiveness to prevent Malaysia from descending into hate and violence, urging Malaysians to embrace these values to save the country.

He called for unity and emphasized the universal virtue of forgiveness found in all religions and cultures, proposing that Malaysians make #MZB365 a national movement to spread the message of forgiveness throughout the year.

As Hari Raya Aidilfitri approached, Fann encouraged Malaysians to sincerely seek forgiveness and practice forgiveness throughout the year, promoting diversity as a strength and advocating for a more compassionate and merciful society.
