In 2023, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, shared that a total of 25,251 individuals took part in the ministry’s Anti-Sexual Harassment Advocacy programme. The programme was held in accordance with the Anti-Sexual Harrassment Act 2022 (Act 840) which was implemented in stages starting March 28th.
Nancy emphasized that sexual harassment has far-reaching effects, not just on the victim, but also on their family, surroundings, and even on organizational productivity, leading to loss of potential talent.
During the KPWKM Media Night at Flora Terrace Hotel, Nancy provided 50 AGS (Anti-Sexual Harassment Guidelines and Notices) notices to representatives of various government agencies and non-governmental organizations, including Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, the Editor-in-Chief of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama).
She also mentioned that the KPWKM @ Advokasi AGS programme aligns with the Employment Act 1955 (Amendment) 2022’s requirement for employers to display notices about sexual harassment in the workplace, which came into effect on January 1st of that year.
Additionally, Nancy explained that the nationwide implementation of the KPWKM @ Advokasi AGS programme aims to provide exposure and convey information about KPWKM’s psychosocial assistance and services, as well as disseminate the use of anti-sexual harassment guidelines and notices to the community.
She underscored the importance of widely sharing the AGS advocacy with the community as a way to remind each other about the issue of sexual harassment.
Notably, the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act 2022 (Act 840) was passed in the Dewan Rakyat on July 20th, 2022, and the Dewan Negara on August 11th, 2022, before being enforced in stages from March 28th. – Bernama
