KUCHING: The national carbon policy is set to be finalized this year after extensive discussions between the Federal Government, state governments, and stakeholders. This development was shared by Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who stated that the policy would be presented during the Malaysia Climate Change Action Council (MyCAC) meeting. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will preside over the meeting, which will also be attended by mentris besar and chief ministers.

During a press conference, Nik Nazmi revealed, “We will present the national carbon plan details to MyCAC this week, and it will be implemented promptly. This is not just concerning Sarawak; other states are also eager to learn about carbon trading and how they can participate. The Federal Government’s role is to facilitate the carbon policy, and we are committed to finalizing it this year.”

In relation to carbon trading legislation, the Minister mentioned that discussions with state governments were ongoing, stating, “Their involvement is crucial as land matters fall under state jurisdiction. We will consider the need for legislation after the outcome of the MyCAC meeting. Currently, there is no Bill regarding carbon trading, as it remains a policy level matter.”

Additionally, Nik Nazmi and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg attended the handover ceremony of eight river corridor rehabilitation projects. These projects, costing a total of RM63 million, were successfully completed by the Drainage and Irrigation Department in various districts such as Batang Kayan, Batang Balingian, Batang Sadong, Baram River, Rumah Naing, Pekan Sabtu Oya, and Betong.
