KUALA LUMPUR: On Monday (Sept 18), a total of 6,964 summonses were issued as part of the Respect Traffic Laws operation, according to Asst Comm Sarifudin Mohd Salleh, the chief of Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT). The majority of the offences, resulting in 5,317 summonses, were related to traffic obstruction. Other significant offences included vehicles on the white line and pedestrian walkways, for which 332 summonses were issued, as well as running a red light (133 summonses) and driving without a license (101 summonses).

The operation took place at 16 locations in Kuala Lumpur, with the participation of over 800 police officers and personnel. ACP Sarifudin reported that 11 individuals were detained during the operation for various violations, such as driving under the influence of alcohol and testing positive for drugs. This operation, codenamed the Respect Traffic Laws, was part of the police’s efforts against traffic offenders in Kuala Lumpur.

The operation commenced on Friday (Sept 15) and will continue until Saturday (Sept 30). ACP Sarifudin emphasized that the police would focus on main roads in the city, including the junctions of Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Sultan Ismail, and Jalan Raja Laut. The operation will be conducted at different times, especially during peak hours. The main offences targeted are illegal parking, running a red light, stopping on pedestrian walkways, illegal number plates, and vehicle tints.

In the first phase of the operation held in July, approximately 157,000 summonses were issued, with the majority related to traffic obstruction or illegal parking. These offences can cause traffic congestion and endanger road users’ safety, hence the strict enforcement. The primary goal of the operation is to ensure the safety of all road users and ensure compliance with traffic laws. The second phase of the operation, which involves other agencies such as the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), will take place from Sept 15 to Sept 30.
