KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has announced that a new 1,000-inmate capacity prison will begin operating in Sabah’s east coast Lahad Datu district on October 1. This move aims to address the overcrowding issues in prisons located in Tawau, Sandakan, and Kota Kinabalu, said the Home Minister. The prison in Lahad Datu will initially undergo a one-month trial with 100 inmates before increasing the number to 450. It is expected to be fully operational by January.

Saifuddin emphasized that this new 1,000-capacity prison will significantly relieve congestion issues that can potentially lead to infectious diseases. Furthermore, it will create a conducive environment for inmates, reducing stress levels that may contribute to suicides, escape attempts, or fights. He further highlighted that the Madani government aims to prioritize the well-being of prison inmates by providing adequate living space.

To mark the occasion, Saifuddin and Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi were present to witness the official handover of the Lahad Datu prison from the Works Ministry to the Home Ministry in Lahad Datu. The construction of the prison began in 2017 and was completed at a cost of approximately RM176 million, compared to the RM200 million approved under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP), according to Nanta.

In addition to the construction of the new prison, Saifuddin mentioned that the Home Ministry has implemented two other measures to combat overcrowding in prisons. These measures include the parole system and the implementation of the Prisoners’ Release on Licence (OBB) program.

Regarding the progress of the Sabah Pan Borneo Highway project, Nanta expressed hope that work on the remaining 35 packages in the state will begin soon after the appointment of contractors is finalized by the end of the year. He emphasized that expediting the construction of the highway is a government priority, as many packages are yet to commence. The first phase of the project, consisting of 15 work packages, is currently 82% completed and is expected to be fully finished by January.
