The newly elected Simpang Jeram assemblyman spent his first day as the people’s representative by meeting and thanking voters.

Nazri Abdul Rahman, who won the seat with a 3,514 majority on Saturday (Sept 9), visited two kopitiam and a warung here, where he spent some time talking to the people.

“I decided to meet the people today (Sept 10) to thank them for their support personally.

“I will take one day of rest tomorrow (Sept 11) to regain my strength as we have just had two weeks of intense campaigning.

“After that, I will continue meeting the people to not only thank them but also to listen to their woes,” he said, adding that he is expected to be sworn in as the assemblyman next week.

He added that he would like to focus on addressing flood issues, providing more facilities for young people, and looking into the welfare of the elderly.

“I will also make sure that the Rahmah initiative initiated by the late Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub will be continued.

“Even before the election, I have already been taking notes of the problem faced by the people here as I was also part of the secretariat of this seat under Salahuddin,” he said, adding that his service centre was always open for the people.

On Saturday (Sept 9), the election result was announced by Election Commission returning officer Jamil Hasni Abdullah, who is also the Muar Municipal Council’s president.

Nazri was the head of the local council’s engineering department before retiring early to compete in the election.

“It was also a special moment for me as my former boss announced the result.

“He has also given me some words of encouragement when I told him I want to contest and reminded me to ensure that I continue to take good care of the people of Simpang Jeram,” he said.
