Three new vice-chancellors have been appointed to lead three different universities in Malaysia. Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahib Sahibuddin has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Prof Datuk Dr Yuserrie Zainuddin has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), and Prof Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor of Universiti Malaya (UM).
Prof Shahrin Sahib will begin his term as UiTM’s vice chancellor on November 2, replacing Prof Datuk Dr Hajah Roziah Mohd Janor. Prior to this appointment, Prof Shahrin Sahib served as the deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and International) of Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and later as the vice-chancellor of the same university for five years. He also has administrative experience in other educational institutions and private universities.
The Higher Education Ministry (MoHE) stated that Prof Shahrin Sahib is widely respected both within and outside the country and has been instrumental in enhancing UiTM’s visibility and excellence in the field of disruptive technology. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Engineering from Purdue University West Lafayette, the United States, and a PhD in Parallel Processing from the University of Sheffield, UK.
Prof Noor Azuan Abu Osman has been appointed as the vice-chancellor of Universiti Malaya for a three-year term starting on November 6. He takes over from Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Hamdi Abd Shukor. Under Prof Noor Azuan’s leadership, UM has achieved the 65th position in the World University Ranking 2024. He previously served as the deputy vice-chancellor (Academic Affairs and International) of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) and later as the vice-chancellor of Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN).
Prof Noor Azuan holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) from the University of Bradford in the UK, and a Master of Science and PhD in bioengineering from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. He is also an Academy of Science Malaysia fellow and a recipient of the Academic Award Nation (AAN) in 2022.
The MoHE expressed confidence in Prof Noor Azuan’s ability to enhance UM’s position as a leading scientific institution and nurture intellectual talent. They believe he will sustain UM’s accomplishments and prestige as a research university on the global stage.
Prof Yuserrie Zainuddin has been reappointed as the vice-chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah for one year, starting on November 1. The MoHE stated that Prof Yuserrie’s reappointment will allow him to continue strategizing the advancement of UMPSA as a technical university focused on technology and engineering, and produce graduates who meet the industry’s demands.
