An infant, who is only a week old, was found abandoned in Kota Kinabalu with a note believed to be from her mother, pleading for help to take care of the child. The note, discovered by the imam of a mosque in Luyang named Adzwan Eman, stated that the mother was unable to care for the child due to circumstances beyond her means. The newborn was found on Sunday at 9pm, and based on the note, she was born on October 31.
Adzwan Eman, 28, who had just arrived at the mosque with his family, heard noises that seemed like a car or something similar. He was surprised to find out that the sound originated from a baby crying. He went to investigate and discovered a box at a section of the mosque, containing a baby wrapped in cloth. Adzwan immediately brought the baby and the note into the mosque and informed the other mosque members, who then contacted the police.
Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Mohd Zaidi Abdulah stated that the baby seems to be in good health. She has been sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital to undergo a check-up and observation. The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code, which deals with the act of abandoning a child below the age of 12. Anyone with information regarding the case is urged to contact Inspector Hatikah Ahmad, who is in charge of the investigation, at 016-833 7246.
