KUALA LUMPUR: Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stated that films promoting LGBTQ lifestyles will not be approved for screening in Malaysia, along with those containing elements of communism, islamophobia, deviant teachings, and those contradicting Islamic beliefs.

The Malaysian government has not ratified any international conventions related to LGBTQ issues and does not recognize LGBTQ lifestyles, according to the Minister.

These films will not be permitted for screening in Malaysia after undergoing the censorship process, he mentioned during a briefing at the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (March 21).

Saifuddin Nasution highlighted the challenges faced by the censorship board in meeting the interests of film and broadcasting practitioners, the public as viewers, and government agencies while ensuring a balance.

He emphasized the importance of engaging with all stakeholders in the film industry for successful leadership under the current administration.

“There is now greater openness in the filmmaking process as the audience participates and collaborates with the censorship board,” he added.

Modifications to scenes or aspects of a film are made without compromising the storyline, with input from those involved in production, he explained.

Decisions on classification or screening are not unilateral but involve various experts and stakeholders, Saifuddin Nasution pointed out.

He also mentioned the availability of an appeals board for further discussion, comprising representatives from the public and experts, particularly in matters concerning law and religious viewpoints.

Consultation with relevant institutions is done when dealing with legal or religious perspectives, he added.

In response to queries on whether online streaming platforms should be subject to censorship, the Minister clarified that streaming services fall under the jurisdiction of the Communication Ministry, distinguishing between broadcasting and over-the-top services.
