KUALA LUMPUR: According to Pakatan Harapan information chief Fahmi Fadzil, we shouldn’t compare the arrests of caretaker Kedah menteri besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in 1998.
The Communications and Digital Minister stated that those who make the comparison are trying to emphasize a certain narrative.
Fahmi stated, “This is the narrative that some people are trying to emphasize. However, the reality is that in 2021, a man in his 60s was detained between 3am and 4am for allegedly insulting Sanusi.”
When speaking to reporters after the national level Maal Hijrah celebration on Wednesday (July 19), Fahmi added, “To me, that is a more accurate comparison.”
In August 2021, a 61-year-old man known as “Tok Abah” was detained in Lenggeng, Negri Sembilan due to a viral video on Facebook where he berated Sanusi.
The senior citizen was taken to Sungai Petani for investigations after insulting Sanusi over his comment to the media regarding “signing up to get into containers for the Covid-19 dead”.
Fahmi emphasized that Sanusi’s arrest should serve as a lesson that there are boundaries when it comes to discussing the royal institution.
“Do not insult the royal institution and try to incite the people against the rulers. It is a boundary that should not be crossed,” Fahmi said.
He declined to comment further on Sanusi’s case as the trial is currently ongoing.
