    No extra fee for 5G will help economy but govt must keep watch, says Fomca

    KUALA LUMPUR: The Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations (Fomca) has expressed its support for the government’s decision to prevent mobile network providers from charging additional fees for 5G access, ensuring that no consumer is disadvantaged.

    Saravanan Thambirajah, the chief executive officer of Fomca, stated that this decision was made in consideration of the increasing cost of living, and predicts that greater 5G adoption will result in an overall increase in productivity.

    He highlighted the capabilities of 5G technology, stating that it can provide high-speed Internet at an exponential rate higher than 4G technology. He also emphasized the potential for this technology to boost mobile communication and create new industries that will benefit the economy.

    While recognizing the efficiency of 5G technology, Saravanan urged the government to remain vigilant and investigate consumer complaints if any additional charges are imposed.

    Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced on Jan 9 that telecommunications companies will not impose additional charges on users for accessing the 5G network. He also stated that all chief executive officers of telecommunications companies had assured him of this.

    Nur Fitri Ismail, a private sector worker, emphasized the necessity of 5G access, particularly in relation to education and work. She also expressed concerns regarding data plans and the potential financial burden if additional charges are imposed.

    Farhana Zakaria, an online trader, highlighted the importance of keeping 5G access costs low, particularly for individuals like herself who rely on this technology for their businesses.
