Tebrau MP Jimmy Puah Wee Tse stated that the recent by-election results in Pulai and Simpang Jeram indicate that there is no “green wave” in the southern region of Malaysia, but rather a “red and blue” one. Puah, who is also the PKR division chief of Pulai, believes that this victory sends a strong message that Johor is not a place for those who exploit race, religion, and the royal institution for political gain.

Speaking at a press conference held at Pakatan’s supporters camp in Taman Dahlia, Puah emphasized that Johor remains true to its identity and values. He further mentioned that the colors red and blue symbolize the state, alluding to the flag of Johor. Puah characterized this win as a triumph for a more moderate Malaysia.

According to the Election Commission, Pakatan emerged victorious in both the Pulai parliamentary seat and Simpang Jeram state seat in Johor. Suhaizan Kayat, former Johor state speaker, secured a significant majority of 18,641 votes in the Pulai parliamentary by-election. His opponents, Zulkifli Jaafar from Perikatan Nasional, received 29,642 votes, while independent candidate Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi garnered 528 votes.

The situation was similar in Simpang Jeram, where Nazri Abdul Rahman, the Pakatan candidate, won with a majority of 3,514 votes. Nazri gathered 13,844 votes, while Perikatan Nasional’s Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya obtained 10,330 votes, and independent candidate S. Jeganathan received 311 votes.
