KUALA LUMPUR: Fahmi Fadzil, the Communications Minister, stated that there has been no comprehensive discussion regarding a proposed law to ensure the current government’s administration until the end of its term.
He mentioned that the proposal for such a law was brought up at the Cabinet level, with various opinions being submitted openly or in specific discussions on the necessity and appropriateness of similar laws in several other countries.
Fahmi highlighted that in some other countries, laws against party hopping are usually included in the fixed-term parliament law. He also mentioned the laws that prescribe a specific term for parliament in different countries like the United Kingdom and the United States.
He emphasized that the proposed law aims to ensure the stability of the country and prevent events like the multiple changes of prime minister during the 14th Parliament term from happening again.
Furthermore, Fahmi addressed the appointment of Wanita PKR vice-chief Sangetha Jayakumar to the Port Klang Authority’s (PKA) board of directors, stating that it is not a problem as PKR has only criticized political appointments to government-linked companies (GLC).
He also clarified the difference between GLCs and statutory bodies, stating that laws govern the latter, and therefore, Sangetha’s appointment is not an issue because PKA is not a GLC.
Last Thursday, Sangetha confirmed her appointment as a PKA board member on Facebook. However, her appointment drew criticism from social media users due to a tweet she posted in October 2020 about political appointments in GLCs.
During the opening ceremony, Fahmi, who is also the Lembah Pantai MP, expressed his commitment to helping cover the costs of eye treatment or surgery for eligible B40 individuals in the area.
He invited families in need of eye treatment or surgery related to eye health to inform him, as he is willing to provide financial assistance for such medical procedures. – Bernama
