Politicians should not think they are more important than their party, as proven by those who have fallen out of the spotlight after leaving their party, according to PAS vice-president Datuk Idris Ahmad. He made these remarks during a talk at the sidelines of the PAS’ 69th Muktamar on Saturday (Oct 21) night. Idris did not mention any specific individuals but urged political leaders to learn from those who left PAS and attempted to form new parties but failed to gain traction. Throughout its history, PAS has had some of its leaders, including former president Datuk Seri Asri Muda in 1982, create splinter parties that ultimately made no impact.

Idris, who served as former religious minister, also highlighted that over the span of seven decades, PAS has experienced changes in leadership but has consistently stayed true to its Islamic struggle, which has allowed the party to grow and succeed. He emphasized that while PAS works on Islamic values, it does not claim to be synonymous with Islam. From a small village party, PAS has developed into a national party with extensive experience in governance. Idris explained that the party has gone through different roles, from being in the opposition to forming state governments, and has even engaged in political battles with other parties. This varied experience makes PAS well-suited for governing the country.

Idris quoted a Chinese saying, stating that the true value of gold is tested through fire. He asserted that PAS has weathered difficult times and emerged stronger. He also underscored that PAS has become a political home for Malays and advised leaders not to have an inflated ego that makes them think they are superior to the party.

Idris emphasized that Malays are now starting to understand that politics is intertwined with religion, whereas before they viewed politics with disdain. PAS has strived to demonstrate that politics is not inherently corrupt. Furthermore, he urged Islamic leaders to treat non-Muslims fairly and to align themselves with the righteous, regardless of race or religion.

The issue of garnering the support of non-Muslims was a prominent topic of discussion at the Muktamar, as PAS, under Perikatan Nasional, was successful in securing Malay votes in the last general election and state elections, but failed to win non-Malay votes.
