KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has stated that a referendum is not necessary to determine the sentiment of Umno grassroots regarding the party’s cooperation with DAP. Speaking at a press conference after attending the Malaysia International Halal Showcase, Ahmad Zahid dismissed the need for a referendum, stating that it was merely the personal view of Umno supreme council member Isham Jalil.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, responded to Isham Jalil’s call for a referendum by saying, “Why do we need a referendum? There is no need for a referendum.” Isham had previously expressed his opposition to Umno working with DAP and argued that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had called for a unity government to be formed, but did not mention cooperating with Pakatan Harapan in polls.
Isham Jalil also speculated that he and several other party leaders might be expelled from Umno after the Umno supreme council meeting on the evening of September 13th. However, he emphasized that he had always fought sincerely for religion, race, and country rather than personal gain.
The issue of cooperation between Umno and DAP has sparked conflicting opinions within the party. While some members believe that working with DAP will strengthen the party’s position, others like Isham Jalil are strongly against the idea. The decision on whether Umno will establish cooperation with DAP ultimately lies with the party’s leadership and the supreme council.
The Malaysia International Halal Showcase, which Ahmad Zahid attended prior to the press conference, is a significant event for the region’s halal industry. The showcase provides a platform for businesses to promote their halal products and services and strengthen collaborations within the industry. By participating in the event, Ahmad Zahid demonstrates his support for the development and growth of the halal sector in Malaysia.
As the Deputy Prime Minister, Ahmad Zahid holds a prominent position within the government and the party. His stance on the referendum issue carries weight and will influence the party’s decision on cooperation with DAP. With conflicting opinions among Umno members on this matter, finding a consensus will be crucial for the party’s unity and future direction.
It remains to be seen how the Umno supreme council meeting on September 13th will unfold and whether any decisions will be made regarding cooperation with DAP. The outcome of this meeting will likely have significant implications for the party’s internal dynamics and its relationship with other political entities in Malaysia.
In conclusion, while Isham Jalil called for a referendum on Umno grassroots members’ willingness to cooperate with DAP, Ahmad Zahid dismissed the need for such a referendum. The issue of cooperation between Umno and DAP has generated differing opinions within the party, and the decision ultimately rests with the party’s leadership. The Umno supreme council meeting on September 13th is expected to address this matter and potentially lead to the expulsion of certain party members. Ahmad Zahid’s participation in the Malaysia International Halal Showcase showcases his support for the halal industry’s growth and development in Malaysia.
