KUALA LUMPUR: No new arrests have been made in connection with the ongoing investigation of alleged sand mining concession bribes involving Mentri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI), says Tan Sri Azam Baki.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner said one individual had been rearrested and remanded for seven days.
“We have not made any new arrests in the case.
“The investigating officer is still tracking down shares believed to have been received as bribes,” he told a press conference after a governance enhancement ceremony between MACC and the Social Security Organisation (Socso) here on Friday (Oct 18).

Azam said his officers were not “James Bond”, able to solve cases within a day.
“Such things only happen in a movie.
“Give us time to thoroughly investigate the case,” he added.
He said the MACC has also frozen assets and accounts worth millions of ringgit as part of the investigation.
“We might provide an update on the case within three or four days,” he said.
It was reported that 20 projects under MBI believed to be involved in corrupt activities were being investigated.
Azam had said the state-run projects were part of investigations linked to a politician.

“We are going to check 20 projects involving the state which we have been informed had involved bribes,” he said.
“These are projects which have to do with state interests and are not linked to the current Selangor Mentri Besar.
“We need to wrap up our investigations and collect the evidence before we call the said politician.
“We do not know if there are other politicians involved,” he added, declining to identify the politician in question.
Azam also said a former chief operating officer (COO) of MBI had been rearrested on Thursday (Oct 17) and remanded for a week over another issue.
The former COO had been remanded for one day after his arrest last week and released for health reasons.
