Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stated that any form of government aid provided during the by-election campaign for the Pulai parliamentary seat and the Simpang Jeram state seat cannot have the symbol of any political party. Anwar, who is also the chairman of Pakatan Harapan, discussed this matter with Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. He mentioned that the use of party symbols in the distribution of government aid was previously practiced by Perikatan Nasional and the unity government. However, Anwar believes that party symbols should not be used because the government aid is from the government itself. He made these statements during his attendance at the “Kenduri Rakyat” event, where he also handed over 1,000 Rahmah baskets at Dataran Taman Dahlia on Friday (Aug 25).
The Election Commission (EC) has scheduled tomorrow as the nomination day for the Pulai parliamentary seat and the Simpang Jeram state seat by-elections. Early voting will take place on Sept 5, and polling day is on Sept 9. The by-elections were called for following the passing of Pulai MP and Simpang Jeram assemblyman Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub on July 23.
Anwar emphasized that during the campaign period, all party machinery and leaders should adhere to and respect all the rules set by the EC to ensure a smooth election process. These rules include refraining from using party symbols in the distribution of government aid. Anwar’s statements were reported by Bernama.
