KOTA KINABALU: The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry stated that there have been no reports of rice shortages in stores in Sabah. Ab Alim Multazam, director of Sabah Padi and Rice Regulatory (KPB), confirmed that they have been monitoring rice stocks in the market. He assured that the rice stocks are currently stable and if there is a shortage, supplies will be restocked at the affected locations. Ab Alim’s statement was made in response to a photo of a sign allegedly posted at a Sabah store, which informed customers of restrictions on rice purchases.
The sign indicated that customers are now limited to buying two 10kg rice packets and four 5kg rice packets per consumer. The accompanying message with the photo urged residents of town areas in Sabah to stock up on rice, claiming a shortage of supplies in the entire region. The photo quickly spread on social media platforms in recent days.
Ab Alim mentioned that he has not received any reports about the situation or the store responsible for the sign. He speculated that the trader may have implemented the purchase limits due to limited supplies. Nonetheless, he emphasized that the rice stocks are currently stable.
Ab Alim further stated that there have been no reports of panic buying among consumers following the announcement of an increase in the price of imported white rice. He advised the public against creating or spreading false information, particularly regarding rice supplies, to prevent causing unnecessary alarm.
