PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has refuted claims that it released a media statement regarding an ongoing corruption investigation involving Public Service director-general Datuk Dr Zulkapli Mohamed. The MACC clarified that no such statement was issued on August 23.

The agency’s denial comes in response to a false statement that was intentionally disseminated to mislead the public. MACC strongly urges citizens not to share unverified information, especially when it is of dubious authenticity.

Earlier in April, the Prime Minister’s Department dismissed allegations of an ongoing probe into alleged power abuse by the Public Service director-general and the Chief Secretary to the Government. Similarly, in July, the MACC denied reports quoting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as stating the establishment of an investigative committee to look into Zulkapli’s actions.

This recent incident is part of a series of misinformation campaigns aimed at causing confusion and damaging the credibility of prominent government officials. The MACC calls on the public to exercise caution and rely on credible sources when seeking information.

Concerns over the prevalence of fake news and disinformation have been growing in Malaysia, with multiple cases reported in recent years. These incidents highlight the need for citizens to be discerning consumers of information and to verify the accuracy of news before sharing it.

The spreading of false information not only undermines public trust but also disrupts societal harmony. The MACC emphasizes the importance of responsible information sharing in fostering a culture of integrity and accountability.

As technology continues to advance and facilitate the rapid dissemination of information, it is crucial for authorities and the public to work together in combating the spread of fake news. Efforts must be made to educate individuals on how to discern between legitimate news and misinformation.

By actively promoting media literacy and critical thinking, the government aims to empower citizens to make informed decisions and contribute to a more informed and responsible society. This includes initiatives to enhance digital literacy skills and educate the public on how to identify and report instances of fake news.

Ultimately, by remaining vigilant and cautious, individuals can play a significant role in curbing the spread of fake news and ensuring accurate information is shared within the Malaysian society.

The MACC affirms its commitment to upholding transparency and integrity and remains steadfast in combating corruption for the betterment of the nation.
