The nominations of candidates for the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state seats begins today (Aug 26) at 9am. The Sultan Ibrahim Diamond Jubilee Hall in Johor Baru will be the nomination center for the Pulai parliamentary by-election, while the Muar hall with the same name will serve as the nomination center for the Simpang Jeram state by-election. Candidates have until 10 am to submit their nomination papers at the nomination centers in order to qualify for the by-elections.

Suhaizan Kaiat, a former Johor state assembly speaker and political secretary to the late Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, will be Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for Pulai. Zulkifli Jaafar, Pulai Bersatu’s deputy chief, will be contesting under Perikatan Nasional’s banner. In Simpang Jeram, Pakatan will be defended by Bakri Nazri Abdul Rahman, the constituency’s Amanah deputy chief, who will face off against Dr. Mohd Mazri Yahya, an endovascular surgeon representing Perikatan.

There is also a possibility of Kuala Lumpur Consumer Safety Association president (PKPKL), Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi, running as an independent candidate in the Pulai constituency.

According to the Election Commission (EC), the Pulai parliamentary constituency has 166,653 registered voters, consisting of 165,799 ordinary voters, 927 police personnel and spouses, and 26 overseas postal voters. The Simpang Jeram state constituency has 40,379 registered voters, including 40,373 ordinary voters and six overseas postal voters.

In the 15th General Election, Salahuddin Ayub won the Pulai seat by securing 64,900 votes, defeating the Barisan Nasional candidate Nur Jazlan Mohamed (31,726 votes) and Perikatan candidate Loh Kah Yong (20,677 votes) with a majority of 33,174 votes. Salahuddin also successfully defended his Simpang Jeram seat in the March 2022 Johor state election with 8,749 votes, surpassing Perikatan’s Zarul Salleh (6,350 votes), Barisan’s Lokman Md Don (6,062 votes), and Pejuang’s Mahaizal Mahmor (208 votes).
