The Pelangai state by-election is set to commence tomorrow (Sept 23) with the first step being the nomination process held at the Felda Kemasul Public Hall.

During the nomination, potential candidates will be given one hour, from 9 am to 10 am, to submit their nomination papers. The returning officer will then announce the list of eligible candidates at the nomination center.

The Pahang Election Commission (EC) reported that as of Sept 18, seven sets of nomination forms have been sold. Umno and Perikatan Nasional each purchased three sets, while one set was bought by an organization.

Both Barisan Nasional and Perikatan have announced candidates with prior experience, as they both contested in the last General Election (GE15).

In an effort to defend the party’s stronghold, Barisan Nasional has chosen Datuk Amizar Abu Adam, a member of the Bentong Umno Committee and native of Felda Chemomoi in the Pelangai state constituency.

Perikatan has once again selected Bentong PAS vice-president Kasim Samat as their candidate for the Pelangai by-election. Kasim, who is 63 years old, previously contested for the Pelangai state seat during GE15, but lost to Barisan’s Datuk Seri Johari Harun by a margin of 4,048 votes.

Haslihelmy DM Zulhasli, the president of Pertubuhan Suara Anak Pahang, expressed his intention to participate in the Pelangai by-election as an Independent candidate. Haslihelmy, 36 years old, has put forth his candidacy.

The Pelangai by-election is scheduled for Oct 7 and is being held due to the unfortunate death of Datuk Seri Johari Harun in a plane crash in Shah Alam, Selangor on Aug 17.
