The North-East Monsoon 2023/2024 is set to begin on Saturday (Nov 11) and last until March 2024, and several heavy storms are expected during this period, according to the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia). The early stages of the monsoon are predicted to bring heavy storms in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, and west Sarawak. However, if the monsoon has a strong impact with low pressure weather systems, continuous downpours can be expected in other states as well.

MetMalaysia warns that the downpour could result in flash floods in low-lying areas and areas that are prone to frequent flooding. Additionally, if the downpour coincides with a high tide and storm, the effects of the floods could be extreme. The department also highlights that the strong and continuous winds from the northeast monsoon may generate sea storms with a high risk of increased sea levels and waves in the South China Sea.

In the last phase of the monsoon, which occurs from February to March 2024, less rainfall is expected in the northern regions of Peninsular Malaysia (Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu), Sabah, Labuan, and north Sarawak. MetMalaysia predicts that hot and dry weather will set in by March 2024, potentially leading to heat waves.

This shift in weather patterns is attributed to the El Nino phenomenon, which is expected to continue until mid-2024, and the positive Indian Ocean Dipole until the first quarter of 2024.

MetMalaysia advises the public to be prepared for the monsoon and to stay vigilant by staying informed through the official media and webpage of Met Malaysia at www.met.gov.my or the myCuaca mobile application and official social media. For any information, they can also contact the Met Malaysia Hotline at 1-300-22-1638.
