The National Registration Department (NRD) is conducting an investigation into the case of a 21-year-old woman who has been unable to obtain an identity card (MyKad) after the issue was raised by Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman. The NRD has reached out to the woman for additional details regarding her MyKad application.
In response to the matter being discussed on social media by Malaysians following Syed Saddiq’s Facebook post on September 1, the NRD has urged the public not to sensationalize the issue or make false assumptions about government services. The NRD emphasizes that its processes adhere to the Federal Constitution and current laws, which safeguard the sovereignty and security of the country. Their statement was published on Instagram on September 2.
The NRD further advises individuals facing citizenship issues, late birth registration, adoption, or non-Muslim marriage procedures to seek assistance at any of its offices throughout Malaysia. They discourage the use of agents or middlemen, as each case may require unique solutions. The NRD encourages the public to refer to their portal or official social media accounts for the latest information on their services.
On Facebook, Syed Saddiq shared the story of Melissa, a Malaysian citizen who has been unable to obtain a MyKad despite having a birth certificate. According to Syed Saddiq, Melissa’s lack of identification has affected her access to education and her ability to compete in state-level sports competitions.
