During the 49th epidemiological week (ME49) for the period of Dec 3-9, a total of 109 Covid-19 cases were reported in Johor. This marked a significant increase compared to the 34 cases reported during ME48 (Nov 26 to Dec 2) as stated by Johor health and unity committee chairman Ling Tian Soon.
Ling also mentioned that despite the increase in Covid-19 cases, the situation in Johor remains under control, with a total of 3,430 Covid-19 cases reported from January to Dec 9 this year. He also noted that less than 5% of hospital beds are currently being used to treat Covid-19 patients, with 65 cases being treated at hospitals and four cases in intensive care units.
In response to the surge in Covid-19 cases, the public is encouraged to avoid crowded, confined spaces and close conversation while practicing the 3W guidelines of wash, wear, and warn, as emphasized by Ling.
Aside from Covid-19, the issue of dengue fever was also addressed by Ling, who shared that 249 cases were reported in ME49, marking an 18% increase from the 211 cases reported in ME48. Of these cases, 77 were in epidemic localities and 172 were in non-epidemic localities, with the highest number of cases reported in Johor Baru at 183.
It was noted that although no deaths involving dengue were recorded during ME49, the public is advised to always monitor their surroundings and ensure there is no stagnant water that could allow mosquitoes to breed. Ling also highlighted the concerning statistic of 20 death reports involving dengue as of Dec 9 this year, compared to only six cases in the same period last year.
