A nurse at a public hospital in Alor Gajah, Malaysia, lost RM125,000 after falling for a love scam, according to Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Arshad Abu. The 30-year-old victim, who is a single mother, was tricked by a man she met on TikTok on September 29. The suspect promised to send her expensive gifts and even proposed marriage. However, on October 8, the victim received a call from a representative claiming to be from a courier service. The caller demanded various payments for stamp and excise duties in order for the gifts to be delivered.
From October 8 to October 15, the victim took out personal loans and borrowed money from friends to make the payments demanded by the courier service. She made a total of 12 transactions depositing the money into four different bank accounts provided to her.
Despite the victim’s efforts, she never received the promised gifts and ultimately felt cheated. As a result, she lodged a police report at Alor Gajah police headquarters on October 17. The case is currently under investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which deals with cheating offenses.
