In the vicinity of Kota Kinabalu, the driver of a van, aged 35, lost his life in a crash, while a passenger sustained injuries after their vehicle collided with trees along the old Papar road in Penampang.
According to reports, the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, which resulted in the crash into a dense bushy area at approximately 5pm on Saturday (Dec 16).
Penampang OCPD Supt Sammy Newton mentioned that an 18-year-old boy was the passenger and informed that an emergency call was received at approximately 5.11pm, following which a team was dispatched to the scene.
After the rescuers arrived, both victims were taken out of the wrecked van.
“Subsequently, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the teenager was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment,” said Supt Sammy.
He added that the case is being investigated under the Road Transport Act 1987 and advised the public to avoid sharing misleading information or photos of the crash out of respect for the affected families’ sensitivities.
Supt Sammy also urged individuals with knowledge about the accident to come forward and assist with the investigations.
