According to Kubang Pasu deputy police chief DSP Chien Chunng Tsaur, a military truck carrying food overturned at Jalan Kampung Bukit Kechik Changlun near JITRA, causing the death of one soldier and injuring five others. The incident was reported to the police at 1.30pm on Thursday (Feb 22).
The truck was being driven by a 29-year-old soldier from Bukit Kayu Hitam Border Regiment when it was on its way from Kepala Batas Wataniah Camp (513 AW) to the 30th Brigade headquarters in Bukit Cowder Camp, Perlis. The driver allegedly lost control while avoiding an oncoming car.
The narrow road and unpaved road shoulder contributed to the driver losing control, causing the truck to veer off the road into an oil palm plantation. One of the five passengers in the back of the truck sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The body was sent to Jitra Hospital for post-mortem, where one other injured victim was also receiving treatment. The remaining four injured victims were taken to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for further treatment.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987 for reckless driving. – Bernama
