According to Anthony Loke, the maximum price of a one-way flight from Peninsular Malaysia to Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan on Dec 22, 23 and 24 will be capped at RM599.
The Transport Minister mentioned that the fare will be shown on the respective airlines’ websites starting from 12.01am on Saturday (Dec 16).
This initiative involves flights from AirAsia, Firefly, Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air.
Loke stated that the Cabinet approved this decision on Wednesday (Dec 13) as an effort to ease the financial burden on people wanting to travel home for the festive season.
He clarified that not all tickets will be priced at RM599 and that there will still be flights that cost less than the capped price.
He emphasized that the price cap only affects those that would have originally cost more than RM599.
Loke further explained that the RM599 cap applies regardless of flight takeoff times.
He also mentioned that the government will absorb the difference in cost for tickets that would have originally cost over RM599.
He added that the exact amount spent by the government on this subsidy will only be known later.
Furthermore, this price cap initiative will also be implemented for upcoming festive seasons next year, including Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Kaamatan, Gawai and Christmas.
