IPOH: Some 136 people, including underaged children, were hauled up by the police during an Op Samseng Jalanan to deter illegal racing at Jalan Meru Raya-Klebang here.

Perak police chief Datuk Comm Azizi Mat Aris said those involved were aged between 12 and 45.

“We received complaints from the public about the illegal racing activities there, which is a hot spot and became an illegal racing track.

“Some were involved in the illegal activity while some were there to watch, including the 12-year-old,” he said in a press conference after the operation at the Kampung Tawas police station here on Sunday (Sept 22).

“We have our school liaison officers call up the schools and their parents, informing them to advise the children to not get involved in illegal racing activities.

“They may spectate now as a hobby but could become a participant later,” he said, adding that two men, in their 20s, were also tested positive for drugs.

“We are still checking how many motorcycles were involved in the illegal racing activity,” he added.

Comm Azizi said a policeman suffered light injuries after a motorcyclist crashed into him during the operation.

“There is always a risk in such an operation. I’ve always advised my officers to be careful,” he said, adding that the Environment Department and National Anti-Drugs Agency were also involved.

Comm Azizi said he hoped those involved, including the young children, would repent and stay away from illegal racing.

“I feel sorry for them for not loving themselves or their own family.

“I hope they will repent and not be involved in such activities anymore, as they still have a long way ahead of them in life,” he said.

“Some of them might not know they are committing a crime, so I urge parents to always advise their children,” he added.
