An open water swim event to raise awareness about breast cancer and its challenges is scheduled to take place at Tanjung Aru Beach on Malaysia Day (Sept 16).
The event is organized by Kinabalu Pink Ribbon as part of their breast cancer awareness initiative to highlight the difficulties faced by breast cancer patients and survivors in Sabah.
Rainty Tioh, a breast cancer survivor and participant in several open water swim races, proposed the idea to target a different group of sports enthusiasts while continuing to raise awareness for the association.
She believes that open water swimming can boost self-confidence and strength, benefiting overall health and wellness.
Tioh asserts that open water swimming fosters a deep connection to the natural environment and contributes to mental and physical wellness, which are essential elements in recovering from breast cancer.
Kinabalu Pink Ribbon members, with the help of open water swimmers, kayakers, stand-up paddlers, and a rescue boat, conducted three recces to plan the swim route.
Tanjung Aru Eco-Development (TAED) is sponsoring the venue, where nearly a hundred participants will swim either a 2.5km or 5km route starting at the beach fronting Prince Philip Park, while newcomers can opt for a shorter 500m route.
The association expects many young participants who are experienced pool swimmers eager to test their skills in open water.
Supporters and spectators are anticipated to cheer the swimmers on, and members of the Malaysia Mermaid Club will swim alongside the participants at the start line wearing mermaid costumes.
To ensure safety, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and safety boats will accompany the swimmers along the route and provide assistance if needed.
First aid and emergency response personnel from the fire department, KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital, Kinabalu Life Saving Society, and Kinabalu Yacht Club will be on standby throughout the event.
In addition to the swim, various activities such as a car boot sale with food and beverage offerings, Pink Ribbon merchandise, and booths educating the public on breast self-check and live-saving techniques have been organized for a fun day at the beach.
The event aims to promote open water swimming as a fun activity for both competitive swimmers and newcomers while supporting a worthy cause.
Family, friends, and members of the public are encouraged to join this exciting event.
